It’s not every day a bookmaker offer a 1/5 shot at Evens. In fact, it could be one of the first times something of this nature has happened in any walk of horse racing punting.
Yes, Coral are going Evens on Sprinter Sacre winning the 2013 Queen Mother Champion Chase on Ladies Day at the Cheltenham Festival.
This offer has the potential to cost the leading bookmaker near £1million if as expected the sumptuous chaser continues his unbeaten record over fences.
The Nicky Henderson-trained superstar is perhaps the most exciting horse to emerge on the National Hunt scene since Kauto Star in 2004.
He could potentially be what Frankel is to Flat racing. The way he jumps a fence is sensational, and he has seen off all before him in his two seasons over the timber thus far.
The seven-year-old won the Arkle Chase at the Cheltenham Festival in 2012 and it’s surely only a matter of when, not if, about him securing another major Cheltenham prize.
The Even money on Sprinter Sacre will be available to all new and existing online, mobile and telephone customers up to a maximum bet of £20 per customer. The offer was announced by the Coral team nearly a week ago but they have kept to their word and run the offer right up until the race itself.
Simon Clare, PR manager at Coral, said: “This is by far the biggest, and potentially most costly, Cheltenham offer that Coral has ever run but we wanted to give our customers something to get seriously excited about in advance of the meeting so offering a price that is impossible to resist on the banker of the Festival seemed a good way to achieve this.
“Given the size of this offer, we are entering uncharted territory in terms of the demand it will create, but it is our firm intention to hold this price for as long as possible, for days rather than hours, in order to allow every customer who fancies ‘even money’ about Sprinter Sacre time to get on.
“We are going into this with our eyes wide open, and expect to face a sizeable seven figure liability when the tapes go up on Wednesday, but there is only one Cheltenham Festival, and if you want to make a noise you have to come up with a really big offer, and they don’t come bigger than Evens on Sprinter Sacre.”
There is a seven race card for punters to get stuck into at Prestbury Park on Wednesday, and along with Sprinter Sacre, other horses are looking to shine bright.
Punters will be keeping a close eye on the Willie Mullins string today after his wonderful three-timer with Ruby Walsh yesterday. William Hill are obviously thinking it’s not going to be his day today though, as they have promised to go best-priced on his two big chance today – Pont Alexandre in the Neptune and Boston Bob in the RSA Chase.
Hills have pushed the price of the Neptune favourite out to 2/1 this morning, whilst other firms are playing safe at 6/4. This horse has been the talk of Ireland all season with everyone declaring that he is verging on banker material from an Irish point of view. Get on with Hills if you want to join the bandwagon.
The RSA Chase looks a more open race, but Boston Bob is still fancied by many shrewd eyes to go well. He will relish the gruelling nature of the trip and ticks plenty of boxes as a potential RSA winner. William Hill have pushed him out to 5/1 this morning and are expecting to see a wave of support come for the Mullins charge.
